San Xavier District Elders Center - Tohono O'odham Nation, AZ (1995)
A meeting hall for Native American Elders' at San Xavier District on the Tohono O'odham Nation, just west of the historic landmark Mission San Xavier. Built of volcanic stone gathered from nearby Black Mountain, which is considered sacred to the tribal Elders. The building consists of an enclosed courtyard shaded by a traditional Tohono O'odham wa:tho (ramada) fronting the Elders' Hall. ; Functions include social and health programs as well as art, language and crafts activities.
Project begun by Bob Vint, Architect, in August 1991; continued with Gibbs & Vint, Architects, 1992-1993; completed by Vint & Associates, 1995.
